How does this theme apply to your civilization?
Agricultural and pastoral production
  • Society depended on intensive agriculture.
  • The Nile river (after flooding) left behind very fertile soil.
  • Egypt and Nubia were called the "Gifts of the Nile" because of their prosperity.
Trade and Commerce
  • Pottery, honey, wine, fine linen, etc. were traded by Egypt.
  • Gold, silver, linen textiles, leather goods, & dried foods (like lentils) were traded for cedar which was prized by pharaohs.
  • The Nile helped the flow of trade ... it provided transportation!
Labor Systems
  • Peasants and slaves supplied Egypt with hard labor to make agricultural society possible.
  • It took thousands of men years to do the paintings & artwork inside of the pyramids.
  • It took thousands of men years to construct the pyramids, which were HUGE!
Industrialization
  • They built irrigation systems to provide their crops with a steady source of water from the Nile.
  • They built amazing pyramids as massive, royal tombs (usually for pharaohs) which took years and a lot of skill!
Capitalism and socialism
  • Pharaohs were basically the kings of Egypt; they ruled over their regions.
  • Pharaohs were said to be "gods in human form."
  • Political and economic competitions caused many small-scale wars between the Nile kingdoms.
